A few days ago, I woke up defeated. I mean, it was one of those days when you wish you could just stay in bed, curled up in a ball of self-pity. I was exhausted and pretty negative about the possibilities of my day.
Has this ever happened to you?
Fortunately, my outlook on these times has changed over the years. I believe that any situation in which you currently find yourself, is a test that you can learn to overcome in order to grow stronger. In fact, it has been the external and internal resistance that I have felt over time that has helped me to grow as an individual (just like it is the resistance of weights in the gym that helps your muscles to grow).
So, what did I do that fateful morning to change my destiny?
I got up, grumbles and all, and did a few things to overcome the heaviness I was feeling.
First, I did some breathing exercises. Now there are a lot of them that I have learned over time, and some of them are in my book, but you can start by opening a window and breathing fresh air deep into your lower abdomen as consciously as possible for 10 minutes. You will definitely feel the effects.
Next, as some of the cobwebs started to clear in my head, I threw on my running clothes and hopped onto my urban rebounder. It’s a mini-trampoline that I use when I work out inside my apartment. Another 15-20 minutes running in place on that really got my juices flowing, especially if you pair it with some of your favorite start-the-day music!
By the end of my 30 minute routine, I was sweaty, but happy! I no longer felt defeated. I knew that I could conquer whatever happened to me that day.
Even when you start out like a lamb some mornings, you can go into your day like a lion.
And how you go into your day, affects what happens to you.
Remember, that you are constantly responding to life (and life is constantly responding to you) all of the time.
Have you ever had an experience that might have been negative, but you were able to just coast through it because you were in such a good mood?
Have you ever had a relatively minor issue pop-up that somehow became aggravated and intensely negative because of the way you responded to it?
If you have had those types of experiences, then you know what I’m talking about.
You are creating the types of opportunities and obstacles that you have in your life. And the ones that you don’t create, you either make stronger or weaker by your reaction to them.
So having an internally positive state—what I call “Positive Being” is essential to creating the life that you want.
Now, Positive Being is a lot more than what most people call “positive thinking,” where people convince themselves that they are thinking positively by just repeating affirmations over their internally negative state.
Positive Being is really changing the chemistry and energy of your body to radiate with positivity. You make yourself positive from the inside-out, so that you can stay in that zone no matter what happens.
Once you learn to create the state of Positive Being in the morning, there are lots of ways to learn to maintain it all through the day– especially when something challenging happens.
It’s a great trip.
I’d love to hear your questions or comments about this.
