Ask yourself: “How did I get here?”

I was at a hotel bar with my fiancée the other day, and I saw this man. He didn’t look happy. He was overweight, hunched over, and had this glazed over look in his eyes as he swilled his third or fourth martini. That look in his eyes seemed to say, “I wanted so much more out of life—what happened? I’m not happy at all. How did I get here?” I think many of us have those moments, when we question the very nature of our every day existence. Maybe we’re in a job we don’t love, or we feel insecure about our intimate relationship, or we wonder why we don’t do that thing we used to love to do so much when we were younger.

Those moments—those questions—can save our lives if we listen to them. But what do we normally do when those moments arise? We usually just get back to work, or get busy with the kids, or drink another beer and forget about our doubts. That’s the way life is, right? What would happen if we paid attention to those moments? If we listened to our inner yearnings, instead of dismissing them so easily? What could we learn?

Very often, those moments are a gift. A gift that allows us to get off of the treadmill of our daily lives for a minute and consider what we are doing, and why. Maybe there’s a lot more you could be experiencing in your life. That part of you—that little voice—knows it. All you have to do is listen.

OK, so maybe you accept that you want more out of your life. What can you do about it, right? You’re so busy already? But think about what will happen if you don’t listen to that little voice. What if, one day, it’s you with the glazed over look in your eyes, hunched over a warm martini, wondering “What happened?” Don’t let that happen to you. Read 360° Success and discover another way.
